Nature and Scope of Earth Science free essay sample
Some also use their knowledge about Earth processes such as volcanoes, earthquakes and hurricanes to plan communities that will not expose people to these angerous events. Earth science is also known as the Geosciences, the Geosciences or Earth sciences. It is arguably a special case in planetary science, the Earth being the only life-bearing planet. There are both reductionist and holistic approaches to Earth sciences. The formal discipline of Earth science may include the study of the atmosphere, oceans and biosphere as well as the solid earth. Typically, Earth scientists will use tools from physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to build a quantitative understanding of how the earth system works and how it evolved to its urrent state. Like all other scientists, Earth scientists apply the scientific method: Problem statement, Review literature, Formulate hypothesis after observation of and gathering data about natural phenomena and then test these hypotheses. Finally, there is the need for one to publish and explain the research in the scientific community. We will write a custom essay sample on Nature and Scope of Earth Science or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It must however be pointed out that Earth science is inter-disciplinedâ⬠it cuts across all sciences and study fields. Science in the broadest sense refers to any systematic methodology which attempts to collect accurate information about the hared reality and to model this in a way which can be used to make reliable, concrete and quantitative predictions about events in line with hypotheses proven by experiment. In a more restricted sense, science refers to a system of acquiring knowledge based on the scientific method, as well as to the organized body of knowledge gained through such research. The scope of science, therefore, is knowledge through reasonâ⬠and the scope of Earth science is knowledge of the Earth systems through the study of combined science. Knowledge is, therefore, borrowed rom other disciplines such as Geology, which is the study of the earth surface(rocks) and interior; Astronomy, the study of the universe that the Erath is a part of; Meteorology, the study of the weather and Earths atmosphere and Oceanography, the study of the Earths oceans(the four Earth sciences). Geology is the primary Earth science. Literarily, it means the study of the Earth. Geology deals with the composition of earth materials, earth structures and earth processes. It is also time. Geologists search for fuels and minerals, study natural hazards and work to protect earths environment. Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere and how processes in the atmosphere determine earths weather and climate. Since everyone is concerned about the weather, it can be considered very practical. For instance, how climate changes over time in response to the actions of people is a topic of urgent worldwide concern. Oceanography is the study of the Earths oceansâ⬠their composition, movement, organisms and processes. The oceans cover a greater part of the planet. The oceans have a major influence on the weather and changes in the oceans can drive or moderate climate change. Oceanographers work to develop the ocean as a resource and protect it from negative human impact. Astronomy is the study of the universe. Studying space beyond dearth is important since the moon derives the oceans tidal system, asteroids impacts have repeatedly devastated Earths inhabitants and energy from the sun drives our weather and climate. When talking about the nature and scope of Earth Science, it is also necessary to talk about its importance. Today, we live in a time when the Earth and its inhabitants face many challenges. Our climate is changing and that change is being caused by human activity. Earth scientists recognize this problem and will play a key role in efforts to resolve it. Again, we are also challenged to develop new sources of energy that will have minimal negative impact on climate; locate new sources of metals and other mineral resources as known sources are depleted. In a nutshell, the scope of Earth science is knowledge of the earth systems through the study of combined science which also looks at data collection and research woks and the subject being inter- disciplined. Con Conflict essays
Abortion - The Pro/Con Conflict essays Abortion, the Pro/Con Conflict Throughout the United States, the use of abortion is an ongoing controversy and a prominent issue in modern day society. Questions are constantly raised, whether one is Pro-Choice or Pro-Life. Whether it is a moral dilemma, or just simply wrong. Since the beginning of civilization the process of abortion has been practiced, however, by the mid 1800s, many people sought to criminalize the practice. By 1880 abortion had been banned in the United States, by way of protesting via state legislatures. Although abortions were outlawed, they were still being performed illicitly and illegally (Flanders, 5, 36). Women began fleeing to Europe and other foreign areas of the world, where abortion was still legal. By the 1960/s, abortion became a phenomenon, and many women began challenging the law, however none of them succeeded. In March of 1970, a woman by the name of Norma McCorvey sought out to have an abortion due to her meager standard of living. To hide her identity she changed her name to Jane Roe for the case, and filed suit in Dallas, Texas where Henry Wade was district attorney at the time. Eventually, Roe won the case, because the law was declared a violation to the right to personal liberty guarantee by the Fourteenth Amendment (Durrett, 14-15). Since then, abortion has been legal, however, around the mid 1980s conflict began to erupt once more. Protested marches, sit-ins, and violent crimes began to take place. When a person is Pro-Life, they feel that abortion is an injustice, and at many times they take the law into their own hands to prove their point. The activists believe their law is further than that of any state or nation, and that they are obeying to a higher law the law of God (Day, 77). At many times, the protestors gather around clinics where abortions are performed, and attempt to approach patients cars with threats, and/or physical har...

This Is An Assignment Where You Will Choose Either An Adult Classmate, This Is An Assignment Where You Will Choose Either An Adult Classmate, Co your first and (your A day with Mr. Raines Last weekend, I decided to interview one of my uncleââ¬â¢s friends, Mr. Michael Raines. He used to work with the United States Marine Corps. He left the service in 2009 and has been to Asia such as Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. I decided to interview him for this assignment because I would like to know his experiences in that side of the world. Mr. Raines was able to live in Japan because he went to boot camp for the United States Marine Corps in that country. He had just graduated from high school then. Japan made a big impression on him. It was then that he became interested in Asia. Eventually, he married a Filipina and lives in the Philippines for three years. During his stay there, he and his wife were asked assigned by their employer for six months in Thailand. It was this trip which gave him a chance to go to Cambodia and Laos, which were reachable by land travel. For employment and purposes, Mr. Raines was required to go to the two countries to process his visa. He only stayed in the two countries for one to two days and regrets not being able to see the famous sites there. Mr. Raines said that his experience in these Southeast Asian countries were eye-openers because the cultures were very different from American culture. For one, he shared that families find it pleasing to live together in one home. Unlike in America where children are eager to live on their own once they reach eighteen, sons and daughters who are twenty and above can be found still living with their parents and this is not looked down on. Another new experience for him was how people shared dishes together. In these countries, it was the norm to order or cook two or three dishes for sharing. It took a while for Mr. Raines to get used to all these changes. However, he said he would not trade them for anything else. He said his interest in Asia gave him the best gifts ââ¬â his wife and two children.

Global Structures and Local Cultures Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Global Structures and Local Cultures - Essay Example We would start with looking into the definitions racism to determine, what exactly racism is. Building upon it, we would drill down into the matter that what is considered by us as racism and what really is racism but is not considered by us as so. In the end, we would be inquiring for the reasons of such a continuous racism in the human history. This definition thus shows that usually racism is considered as racism only when the racist feelings are executed by the racist. The very word racism connotes some feeling on the basis of race, but since over the history, we have observed such feelings by the majority, as only the majority could execute such feelings, the notion of racism is made limited, by the people, only to those who have such prejudices and are in a position to execute them. However, from the sociological point of view, we would be taking the definition of the racism as the feeling that one's race is superior to others', regardless of the fact that whether those feelings were executed or not. (Bell and Blumenfeld 1995) It is one of the major stereotypes regarding racism that only Whites are the racist. Such feelings are quite evident from the literature written over the period of time. (Miles and Brown 2003) It is however a noteworthy fact that whenever we talk about racism, we have in our mind the execution of the racist feelings. It is a common stereotype that we always consider the party showing the racial behavior is bad while the party to whom such behavior is shown is nice. (Carter 2000) This stereotype has been developed because we have seen the so-called racist from the perspective of the victim. But if we change the perspective, we may find that this is not always the battle of good and evil, nice or vile. People have a habit to look at everything from the perspective of discreteness, to look everything as black or white, people tend to ignore gray areas, as a result of it this perspective has been developed and rooted very firmly in the mind of people that the person who shows racist beh avior is evil while since another party is victim so being the victim makes that party as good and non-racist. Now, it is the time to look at the matter from a neutral point of view. In this regards, first of all we need to determine that execution of the racist feeling does not make a person racist, only the existence of such feeling makes it so. Secondly we need to make it sure that the so-called racist can also be nice, depending on the victim of the racism, the standpoint of the racists etc. (Leone 1978) There may be

Reflection paper - Assignment Example Working in a community projects develops a rational way of making decisions for the students. Lions Clubs International is a large club organization that has over 1,300,000 members in over 46,000 clubs all over the world. Lions Club has community projects that support students by providing a program that empowers them (Martin 66). The main aim of the Lions Club international is to aid students develop their leadership skills and still make a positive impact to their community. The organization achieves this through the Leo clubs which are approximately 6,400 with 160,000 Leos (members). As a Leo in the community project of green team recycling our main motto was to reduce, reuse, and recycle (Martin 210). We engaged in advocating for recycling of items like hearing aids, paint, books, and magazine to keep our environment clean. At the initial stage of joining the project, I learned that I am a role model to my community in preserving my environment. The program offered activities that create a positive attitude towards the environment. Our Leo club focused on promoting recycling in our neighborhood by creating an awareness of taking the initiative of caring for our homes (Sirgy et al. 250). We collected used glass, aluminium, plastic bags and containers to resource recovery locations. All the Leos worked together in teams to take up the recycling challenges to hospitals and parks. We also campaigned on encouraging the local residents to participate in the recycling events within the city. Through the recycling program by the Lions Club International, the community has embraced the idea of recycling. Large organizations and other state owned corporations donate their outdated and non-functional computers to recycling companies (Taylor 94). The recycling companies dismantle the equipments, sort the parts by type, upgrade the components, reassemble units, and then have them distributed to students who may not afford a computer to use in their studies.
